Collect Scotland

Friday 24 March – Sunday 18 June 2017, 10-5pm at The Lighthouse, Glasgow.

Major new exhibition uncovering the secret innovators at the heart of Scottish design.

They influence almost everything you see around you, but you won’t know their names. Textile designers are an integral part of the contemporary design landscape, but the nature of the job means their designs and copyright are sold on, and they don’t often take the credit for their own work. However, we have set out to change all that. Showcasing the work of 15 contemporary Scottish textile designers, SAMPLE aims to draw the focus to these usually anonymous innovators, with one of the largest exhibitions of printed textiles in recent years. Filling the whole of Gallery 1 at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s centre for design and architecture, with printed textiles and sculptural displays of large-scale fabrics in a huge, interactive exhibition featuring specially commissioned work around five key ‘trends’, SAMPLE shows off the versatility, vibrancy and too-often overlooked talent pool of Scottish textile design.

From cashmere to tartan, Scottish textiles are hugely famous the world over, but tend to be associated with heritage design and traditional techniques. SAMPLE challenges that, shining a light on the bold, innovative, contemporary work being created here. Designers in this exhibition have created work for major brands and organisations such as Nike, IKEA, Converse, Paperchase, Made.com, White Stuff and the NHS, but their work straddles commercial and artistic spheres; SAMPLE offers them a unique chance to expand the latter part of their practises.

In addition to the commissioned work by 15 designers, the exhibition will also include a retrospective of commercial work by the wider Collect Scotland membership. Commissioned designers include Vanessa Hindshaw, Chloe Highmore, Hazel Dunn, Marion Parola, Susan Castillo, Mhairi McMullan, Rachel Duckhouse, Yvonne Elliot-Kellighan, Joanna Dixon, Lorna Brown, Lyndsay Mackie, Marie O'Connor, Natasha Samasuwo, Ruth Mitchell and Alice Dansey-Wright.

SAMPLE is accompanied by a programme of workshops, talks and a special trend experience created around each of the five trends set by the curators (Chiaroscuro, Earthly Paradise, Cut and Paste, Emotional Landscape and Remembered Dreams).

SAMPLE runs from: Friday 24 March – Sunday 18 June 2017, 10-5pm  at The Lighthouse, Glasgow. Free entry.
